Advanced Heart Failure Course
Through a combination of lectures delivered by national and international experts and exposure to real cases within the clinics, wards and catheter labs of a busy heart transplant unit, this course will train delegates in the recognition and management of patients with advanced heart failure.
Delegates will understand which patients to refer for heart transplant and when.
By the end of the course attendees will be familiar with heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
Who this course is for
The course is for trainee or postgraduate doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health care professionals with an interest in heart failure.

You will acquire the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies needed to be familiar with heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support therapy.
How you will learn
The course structure is designed to deliver learning through a combination of lecture series and an observership at Harefield Hospital Heart Transplant Unit.

The next online lecture series is on the weekend of 20th, 21st and 22nd February 2026.
The course is available as one of two options:
I. Lecture series only • 3 days (Fri/Sat/Sun) • £400 + booking fee.
II. Full course * (lecture series + 3 week observership) • The observership is available upon enquiry and subject to availability. Given the high demand, availability is now set for April 2027.
* Fees are non-profit and go towards running the course and cardiovascular research.

About us
The Advanced Heart Failure course is the first of its kind in Europe. The course is run by the transplant team at Harefield Hospital. The Heart and Lung Transplant Unit, based at Harefield Hospital, is the UK’s largest and most experienced centre for heart and lung transplants.
Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub carried out Harefield’s first heart transplant on 8th September 1973. Since then, the transplant unit has performed more than 2,500 heart transplant operations with the best long-term survival rates in the UK for patients who have had a heart or lung transplant. The unit has one of the UK’s largest ventricular assist device (LVAD) services.
